What constitutes straight time pay?

Straight time pay refers to the standard wage earned by an employee during a designated pay period, typically a standard workweek of 40 hours. It excludes overtime, bonuses, and benefits like paid time off (PTO). Calculated based on the hourly rate of pay, straight time pay is fundamental for determining base earnings.

Key Differences and Calculations

While similar to regular time pay, straight time pay excludes additional compensation like PTO or sick leave, ensuring a clear distinction. Overtime, paid at an increased hourly rate, is separate from straight time pay. For instance, if an employee earns $20 per hour and works 45 hours in a week, they receive $800 for straight time pay (40 hours) and $150 for overtime (5 hours at 1.5x rate), totaling $950.

Global Variations

Although commonly used in Canada and the US, similar concepts exist worldwide. In the UK, it's termed basic or standard pay, while in Australia and New Zealand, "ordinary hours" is prevalent.
