Wallis and Futuna is a French island collectivity in the South Pacific, located between Tuvalu to the northwest, Fiji to the southwest, Tonga to the southeast, Samoa to the east, and Tokelau to the northeast. It is officially known as the Territory of the Wallis and Futuna Islands. It has a total area of 142.42 km2. At the time of the 2018 census, it had a population of 11,558 people. Its capital and largest city is Mat'Utu. Three key volcanic tropical islands and a number of small islets make up the territory. The Wallis Islands in the northeast and the Hoorn Islands in the southwest, which include Futuna Island proper and the largely uninhabited Alofi Island, are separated by about 260 kilometers. Wallis and Futuna has been a French overseas collectivity since March 28, 2003. It had the status of a French overseas territory from 1961 to 2003. When its status changed, its official name remained the same.
