03. Summary

The United States Virgin Islands, formally the Virgin Islands of the United States, are a group of Caribbean islands that are part of the United States' unincorporated and organized territory. The islands are part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, which is situated in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles to the east of Puerto Rico and west of the British Virgin Islands. The US Virgin Islands are made up of three main islands: Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas, as well as 50 other minor islands and cays. The territory's gross land area is 133.73 square miles. Charlotte Amalie, on the island of St. Thomas, serves as the territory's capital. Previously known as the Danish West Indies of the Kingdom of Denmark–Norway and the independent Kingdom of Denmark, they were sold to the United States by Denmark in the 1917 Treaty of the Danish West Indies for $25,000,000, and have been an organized, unincorporated United States territory since then. The Virgin Islands of the United States of America were founded in 1954 under the Revised Organic Act of the Virgin Islands, and have held five constitutional conventions since then. The projected population in 2021 is 105,870, with the majority of them being of Afro-Caribbean descent. The main economic activities are tourism and related categories.
