03. Summary

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, also known as the Northern Mariana Islands, is an unincorporated territory and commonwealth of the United States that consists of 14 islands in the northwest Pacific Ocean. The CNMI comprises the Mariana Archipelago's 14 northernmost islands; Guam, the archipelago's southernmost island, is a separate US territory. The CNMI and Guam are the United States' easternmost territories. According to the US Department of the Interior, the area is 183.5 square miles. According to the 2010 United States Census, the CNMI had 53,883 residents at the time. The people of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota make up the vast majority of the population. The other islands of the Northern Marianas are sparsely populated; the most prominent of these is Pagan, which has undergone significant population flux over the centuries for different reasons, but once had tens of thousands of inhabitants. The administrative center is Capitol Hill, a village in northwestern Saipan. Because the island is administered as a single municipality, most publications consider Saipan to be the capital.
