Norfolk Island is an Australian external territory in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and New Caledonia, 1,412 kilometers east of Australia's Evans Head and 900 kilometers east of Lord Howe Island. The Territory of Norfolk Island is made up of the three islands: Norfolk Island, Phillip Island, and Nepean Island. It had 1748 people residing on a total area of around 35 km2 at the time of the 2016 census. Kingston is the country's capital. Except for an 11-year period between 15 February 1814 and 6 June 1825, when it was abandoned, the island was used as a convict penal settlement from 6 March 1788 to 5 May 1855. When descendants of the Bounty mutineers were evacuated from Pitcairn Island on June 8, 1856, permanent civilian residence on the island began. The UK handed Norfolk Island over to Australia as an external territory in 1914. The evergreen Norfolk Island pine, which is native to the island, is a symbol of the island and is depicted on its flag. Norfolk Island's main export is the pine, which is a common ornamental tree in Australia and other parts of the world.
