03. Summary

New Caledonia is a French special collectivity in the southwest Pacific Ocean, south of Vanuatu, some 1,210 kilometers east of Australia and 17,000 kilometers from France's metropolitan area. The main island of Grande Terre, the Loyalty Islands, the Chesterfield Islands, the Belep archipelago, the Isle of Pines, and a few small islets make up the archipelago, which is part of the Melanesia subregion. In the Coral Sea, you'll find the Chesterfield Islands. The locals refer to Grande Terre as Le Caillou. New Caledonia is divided into three provinces with a total land area of 18,576 km2. The North and South Provinces are located on the mainland of New Caledonia, while the Loyalty Islands Province is made up of a group of islands off the coast. The population of New Caledonia is made up of a mix of natives, Kanaks, who make up the majority in the North Province and the Loyalty Islands Province, and Europeans, Polynesians, and Southeast Asians, as well as a few people of Pied-Noir and North African descent, who make up the majority in the wealthy South Province. Nouméa is the territory's capital.

The general minimum wage for agricultural workers in New Caledonia is set at 787 CFP Francs per hour which translates to 133,086 CFP Francs a month. For non-agricultural workers the minimum wage is set at 926 CFP Francs which would translate to 156,568 CFP Francs.

09. Employee benefits

General

Healthcare is the most important benefit to people. The government's support for healthcare via the social security system is insufficient, particularly for optical and dental care. This is why employees value the additional coverage provided by their employer. When asked to rank three other common benefits in order of importance, the average employee will most likely say Disability, Death, and Retirement.

Employee benefits that are mandatory include old-age pension, elderly solidarity allowance, long-term disability pension, short-term disability pension, spouse's pension, death grant, and workers compensation. Supplemental employee benefits include retirement and death benefits, short-term and long-term disability insurance, medical insurance, workers' compensation, retirement, and career termination indemnities. Parental leave and profit sharing are among the benefits available.
