03. Summary

Guernsey is a British Crown Dependency in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy. It is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. It is the second largest of the Channel Islands, which are a group of islands off the coast of France, approximately north of Saint-Malo and the Cotentin Peninsula. Ten parishes on the island of Guernsey, three other inhabited islands, and several small islets and rocks make up the jurisdiction. It is not a member of the United Kingdom, though the UK manages its defense and other areas of foreign affairs. The Channel Islands are not a constitutional or political body, despite the fact that the bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are sometimes referred to as such. Jersey has a different relationship with the Crown than the other Crown dependencies of Guernsey and the Isle of Man, despite the fact that they are all owned by the monarch of the United Kingdom. The island has a mixed British-Norman society, with English as the primary language and the Pound sterling as the primary currency. Guernésiais is the traditional local language of the island.
