03. Summary

Christmas Island Territory is an Australian external territory that encompasses the same-named island. It's in the Indian Ocean, some 350 kilometers south of Java and Sumatra and 1,550 kilometers north of the nearest point on Australian soil. It is 135 square kilometers in size. As of 2016, Christmas Island had a population of 1,843 people, the majority of whom lived in settlements on the island's northern tip. Flying Fish Cove is the largest village. In the past, Asian Australians of Chinese, Malay, and Indian ancestry had made up the bulk of the population. Today, Malaysian Chinese or Singaporean Chinese account for roughly two-thirds of the island's population, with large numbers of Malays and European Australians, as well as smaller numbers of Malaysian Indians and Eurasians. English, Malay, and various Chinese dialects are among the languages spoken. The island's main religions are Islam and Buddhism. The religion issue in the Australian census is voluntary, and 28% of the population does not disclose their religious beliefs, if they have any. Several languages are spoken; at home, 27.8% of Christmas Islanders spoke only English, while 17.2% spoke Mandarin and Malay. Cantonese and Min Nan are two other languages spoken at home. The island's main religions are Buddhism and Islam; however, the religion issue in the Australian census is voluntary, and 28% of the population does not state their religious beliefs, if any. Richard Rowe of the Thomas was the first European to sight the island in 1615. Captain William Mynors named the island on Christmas Day 1643, but it was not settled until the late 1800s. Because of its geographic isolation and history of limited human disturbance, its flora and fauna have a high degree of endemism, which scientists and naturalists are interested in. The Christmas Island National Park encompasses the bulk of the island and has many areas of primary monsoonal forest. Since 1899, phosphate has been mined on the island, which was initially deposited as guano.
